An elegant pure white antique COVERED SUGAR BOWL designed in "Plain Uplift" and produced for export to the United States by Burgess & Goddard. Key characteristics of Plain Uplift lines were simple plain designs with handles that appeared to lift upwards. The lid is designed with a ring finial.
According to the book, Ceramic Maker's Marks by Erica Gibson, the printed mark dates the piece from the 1870s - 1880s. The word Prince of Wales is arched above the Royal Coat of Arms with the words, Royal Patent Ironstone Burgess & Goddard below.
The covered sugar bowl is in wonderful condition and measures approximately 6 ¼” with the lid and 4 ¾” high without. The bowl measures about 5 ¼” across from handle to handle. There are no cracks or crazing although there are tiny indents on the bottom rim where the piece most likely sat on the firing stilts. I do not believe they are chips but from the kiln process as one indent is glazed over. Please review the photos carefully.
This would be a wonderful piece to add to someone's antique ironstone collection--or given as a wedding or shower gift!
About Burgess & Goddard: Burgess & Goddard was not a potter but an import firm with offices in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. They were active in the 1870s and 1880s and traded and represented firms such as John Edwards, Wedgewood & Company and South Bridgwood & Son in the United States. The company traded under the name Goddard & Burgess in Staffordshire from the 1840s to the 1890s.
