Original metal lithographed DURKEE'S APPLE PIE SPICE tin.
The tin's front and back panels feature the company's bright red logo, Durkee's above a dark green banner with the words, Apple Pie Spice and a clipart image of a "baked pie." The full company name, Durkee Famous Foods and the parent company, Glidden Quality Products' logo is near the bottom.
A side panel provides the ingredients--a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and orange, as well as the suggested amount to be used in one pie. The other side panel simply states, Durkee's Apple Pie Spice, printed on two lines. What appears to be 6D is stamped on the bottom.
The tin measures approximately 2 ¾” high by 2 ¼” wide and 1 ¼” in depth. It originally held 1 ⅞” net ounces, which is printed in the top left corner. The tin is empty. The top shows rust but other than that, its in good vintage condition with no dents and large scratches.
About Durkee's: The E.R. Durkee & Company was a spice company founded by Eugene R. Durkee in 1857. By the 1920s, it had grown to become a leading manufacturer of salad dressings, meat sauces, pickles, condiments and spices.
Mr. Durkee died in 1926 and left the company to his three daughters, who sold it for $1.8 million in 1929 to the Glidden Company, a paint and chemical manufacturer. In 2005, the Glidden-Durkee division became part of the growing food product conglomerate, Associated British Foods.
In 2016, it was announced that the spice division, that included Durkee, Spice Islands, and Tone's brands, would be sold to B&G Foods.
