The book, "MODERN ELGIN" published in 1950 by ALFRED H. KIRKLAND chronicles Elgin, Illinois from 1835 - 1950 in approximately 200 biographical sketches--most with photographs of Elgin industry, businesses, city government, civic groups, schools and hospitals and the professionals who led them. The full title of the book is Modern Elgin 115 Years of Progress in Industry and Commerce.
Several nationally known companies, for example Elgin National Watch Company, Elgin Sweeper Company, Haegar Potteries, Borden Company, David C. Cook Publishing, and McGraw Electric (Toastmaster products) founded or based in Elgin are highlighted. Those more familiar with Kane County and Elgin, Illinois will recognize the Gail Borden Public Library, W.R. Meadows, Lamp Construction, Wentworth's, Bunge's, and Ziegler Brothers Hardware.
The book provides several insights on the culture and characteristics of the early people of Elgin such as the village being the first city in Illinois to levy a tax on all property for the support of free public schools and a public library.
The book is in good vintage condition. There are watermarks and a few spots on the cover (see photo), but the inside pages are in good shape. I do not see any tears or rips inside. Although stamped Ellis School Library on the inside cover, it must have been available for research only as there is not a library pocket in the back. This would be an excellent addition to anyone's collection of Elgin history and paraphernalia. Size: Approximately 10 3/4" length x 8" wide.
