PILGRIM'S INN: The Herb of Grace by Elizabeth Goudge and published by Coward-McCann of New York in 1948. The book is the second in the series saga: The Eliots of Damerosehay. Outside the United States, the book is sometimes found only as The Herb of Grace.
The copyright page lists only the 1948 copyright date. According to biblio.com, from 1936 on, first editions published by Coward-McCann in the United States only indicate the copyright with no additional printings dates, designating this copy as a first edition.
The book is in near fine condition with no flaws other than dust on the fore edge and minor fading on bottom of spine. There is no book jacket. The cloth-bound hard cover book is a deep burgundy red and the spine label is a deep green. The front and back endpapers are decorated with illustrated portraits of the story's characters.
About the Author: (1900 - 1984) Born in Wells Somerset, Elizabeth de Beauchamp Goudge was an English writer of fiction and children's books. She won the Carnegie Medal for British children's books in 1946 for The Little White Horse, a book J. K. Rowling identified as one of her favorite books and one of few to have direct influence on the Harry Potter series. Goudge's books are notably Christian in outlook as was her background, covering sacrifice, conversion, discipline, healing, and growth through suffering. Her novels, whether realistic, fantasy or historical, weave in legend and myth and reflect a spirituality and love of England that generate its appeal. Goudge died in 1984 at the age of 83.
