This is a beautiful piece of hand painted Impériale et Royale pottery.
The LARGE RIMMED HAND PAINTED BOWL measures about 10 ¾” across and has a 1 ½” deep rim. The pattern on the creamy white bowl is gorgeous. Vivid red and blue flowers with green leaves and yellow vines are hand painted in the center of the bowl with a black and white "stick ware" pattern of flowers on the rim. The black and white pattern is trimmed in the same red glaze used for the flowers. The technique and glazes used are reminiscent of Gaudy Welsh or Gaudy Dutch.
The bowl is stamped with the company trademark, which includes a Crown with the word, NIMY in a box below, encircled by the words, MANUFACTURE IMPERIALE de ROYALE FABRICATION BELGE MADE IN BELGIUM. There is also a "K" stamped on the back. The mark dates the piece to the late 19th to the early 20th century.
Impériale et Royale was founded in 1789 in Nimy, Belgium and had shops in Brussels, Brugge, Gent, Antwerpen and Lille (France). The closed their doors in 1951.
The piece is in wonderful condition without cracks, crazing or chips. There are some glaze smudge marks on the back due to the nature of being a hand painted piece.
